Rentals: We have rental fishing rods and reels available and the rental includes your first shrimpfly, swimbait and jig head all for just $25 per person. Additional shrimpfly, swimbait and jig head sets can be purchased for $12 before the tour or while on the water.
Rod: Medium to Medium-light action rods work best. They give you some leverage against a fish and you’ll still be able to feel them fight. For rod length 7′-8′ is ideal as it will be able to reach around the front of the kayak so you can fish both sides.
Reel & Line: Conventional or bait-casting reels are the best option, however larger spinning reels can work as well.
For fishing line we recommend braid or monofilament in 25lb-50lb test. (30lb-40lb is generally the guide’s preferred strength). If you choose to go with braid make sure to have a minimum of a 20′ monofilament leader of at least 30lb test. It is essential that your reel has a minimum of 300′ of fishing line.
Jigs & lures: When fishing for rock fish we bounce off the bottom and as a result we can snag the bottom. Sometimes our guides can free your lure but not always so we do lose fishing gear. Its common to lose one lure, so we recommend bringing extra its rare to lose tree lures in one day. We like to fish a shrimp fly 2′-3′ above our bottom lure. The bottom lure will be a Jighead with swimbait tail or jigging iron depending on experience of the person fishing.
Three shrimp flies or bucktails of any color with 3/0-4/0 hooks.
Three 6oz Jig heads, and three 5′-7′ swimbait tails. Colors often don’t make a difference, our fish just like to bite. We recommend you pick your favorite colors. For no statistical reason we often prefer rootbeer, orange, purple haze or glow colors.
For those with more rockfishing experience we recommend the jig heads and swimbaits with three 6oz-8oz jigging irons. Once again any color works we line green, blue, orange, pink, glow or silver.
